Noel McNamara, President of the Crime Victims Support Association, has urged the Victorian government to make the parole board more transparent.
Steve Medcraft, President of People Against Lenient Sentencing, also hopes that the parole board decides to make its reasons for decisions public so that the community can better understand how risk assessments are being made. He said that currently there is no accountability and no transparency.
Victims of crime advocates have been requesting the Victoria state government make the Adult Parole Board of Victoria more transparent and accountable particularly since the rape and murder of Jill Meagher by a serial rapist who had been released on parole and had prior to Ms Meagher’s murder breached parole.
In Canada parole board decisions are released publicly and which is certainly a position supported by Victims of Crime Counselling & Compensation Services.
