Assaults in the Goulburn Valley and Wodonga regions have increased last year by more than 15% according to 2013 Victoria Police figures.
Increases in the Goulburn Valley were driven mainly by family violence, with Wangaratta also recording a jump in domestic assaults.
According to Tony Davis, Wodonga based Police Inspector, more than 30% of those cases, the offenders were under the age of 18 and alcohol and drugs were often involved.
Dave Ryan, Police Inspector, said that family violence continues unabated and that police are looking at ways to change community attitudes to family violence. He said that police are looking at what leads to these assaults and tailoring policing responses and to build a proactive response to prevent the harm before it occurs.
