According to Victoria Police figures Australia Day sees more assaults than any other public holiday.
On the 26-01-13 there were 121 reported non-family violence related assaults– almost twice the average daily number.
On the 26-01-12 there were 109 reported assaults.
On the 26-01-11 there were 121 reported assaults.
Victoria police said that on a typical day there are around 69 reported non-family violence related assaults across Victoria.
From 2012 to 2013 in Victoria there was a total of 58,312 reported offences against the person.
Tim Cartwright, Deputy Commissioner said “the figures were alarming for a day that was supposed to be one of the proudest in the nation’s history”.
