Trauma and the related symptoms can also be passed from parent to child, and this is called intergenerational transmission of trauma.

This may happen when the child is discouraged from talking about disturbing events, thoughts, or feelings; when parents share too many details of the traumatic event; when the child adopts the parent’s symptoms as a way to connecting with them; or when the child re-enacts the trauma as they see it being played out by the parent.

Help your children cope with your trauma by explaining the reasons for your difficulties, but not in too much detail, and ensure that your children understand that your symptoms are not their fault.
