A recent South Korean Study found that:
36% of the child victims file charges with police while 37.8% take no action and 16.8% consider filing charges.
Reasons for failing to do so included:
Parents of victims giving up due to the difficult procedure of filing charges where young victims have to testify repeatedly.
Most families are reluctant to make their children’s cases public.
Children under 7 years accounted for 51% of all sex crime victims.
Children aged between 7 and 13 years accounted for 43 percent of all sex crime victims.
39% child victims were sexually assaulted once and 39.4% more than twice or repeatedly, with 21.4% suffering unknown numbers of sexual assaults.
Chung Woon-sun, a Professor of Paediatric and Adolescent Psychiatry at Kyungpook National University School of Medicine, said “Many sex offenders target young children, who can’t express themselves well and slip through the legal dragnet even after committing their crimes.” … “We should make sure that children are never left alone because neglected children are vulnerable to sex crimes.”
