In 2011 – 2012 1386 prisoners of 1843 prisoners on parole breached their parole orders, a 30% increase over the previous year.
659 prisoners had their parole cancelled, including 107 who recorded another conviction.
3 Victorians were murdered by parole violators during 2011 – 2012.
Sex offenders breached court-ordered conditions 1192 times, a more than 50% increase from the previous year.
Detective Sergeant Michael Gunn said “that the jump in breaches by 3030 registered sex offenders is a result of a crackdown in the enforcement of court orders after an Ombudsman’s report and a task force last year led by Police Minister Peter Ryan”.
Noel McNamara, President of Crime Victims Support Association, said “stricter conditions should apply to parolees”.
In July 2012 a blitz by police saw 460 parolees back behind bars.
