Melbourne’s CBD crime rate in is more than double that of any other place in Victoria.

The City of Yarra, including Fitzroy, Collingwood, Abbotsford and Richmond, comes in second.

The City of Maribyrnong, including Footscray and Yarraville, comes in third.

Most common crimes were robbery, assault and theft.

Melbourne’s assault rate was about four times the state average with Greater Dandenong in second place followed by Yarra.

The lowest crime rate was in the City of Manningham, including Doncaster and Bulleen.

Steve Fontana, Assistant Police Commissioner said that “the establishment of the Safe Streets Taskforce had helped reduce the crime rate in the CBD but that it was still unacceptably high”.

Mr Fontana said that thousands of people come into the CBD every day and if people come and binge drink they can become victims of crime as well as sometimes becoming more violent and committing a crime. He said that Yarra’s and Maribyrnong’s high crime rate was due in part to the illegal drugs scene associated with the areas.

The city of Moreland had the highest homicide rate in the state.

The regional area with the highest crime rate was The City of La Trobe, which includes Moe and Traralgon, with West Wimmera being the safest place in Victoria.
