In 2011-12 in Victoria there were 77,676 crimes recorded against small businesses, such as petrol stations, convenience stores, hotels, restaurants and supermarkets, a 4% increase over the previous year.
Aggravated burglaries increased by 22%.
Arson by 19%.
Burglaries involving people working from home by 16%.
Motor vehicle theft by 23%.
Crimes of deception by 3%.
Petrol Station Drive Offs by 17%.
Tim Piper, State Director of The Australian Industry Group, said that “the figures were troubling and highlighted the need for some businesses to beef-up security”.
Mark Stone, Chief Executive of The Victorian Employers Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said “the trend reinforces the importance of strong law enforcement”.
