The rate of rape increased by 12.5 per cent, in 2011/12, in the city of Glen Eira.
The rate of rape increased from the rate in 2010/11, while all other crimes to the person have reduced in prevalence. The total crimes to a person in Glen Eira decreased by 10.9 per cent during this period.
Rape is a crime punishable by the Victorian Crimes Act 1958 and is liable to 25 years imprisonment.
This crime causes long-lasting trauma on its victims and often causes depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.
In 2011/12 robbery decreased by a weighty 22.8 per cent. That is only 61 offences of robbery were recorded, in comparison to the 79 offences recorded in 2010/11.
Assault also decreased by 10.9 per cent in 2011/12, however it is still the offence with the highest prevalence within the area.
The city of Glen Eira is not alone with increasing rates of recorded rape.
The amount of recorded occurrences of rape in Victoria also increased by 11.8 per cent in 2011/12.
Unlike Glen Eira, however, levels of assault in Victoria also increased by 14 per cent. With the overall rate of crime against the person increasing by 11.8 per cent.
While overall crime rates have reduced in Glen Eira the recorded rape increases are significant and necessitate addressing.
