A new survey funded by the Avon Foundation for Women found that more than half of American’s interviewed said they have never discussed sexual assault or domestic violence with their friends.

22% of Americans say that they have been a victim of domestic violence and 13% report being the victim of sexual assault.

The data suggests “staggering silence and inaction around domestic violence and sexual assault.”

Carol Kurzig, President of The Avon Foundation for Women, said that ‘silence leaves victims trapped by the shame, stigma and fear that these crimes carry’.

Ms Kurzig said that if victims can be encourage to talk about their sexual and domestic violence and bring these issues to light a new way may be achieved to address these issues.
