On Sunday the 10-09-12 at around 1.00 am a twenty-year-old male attacked a thirty-year-old Taxi Driver over a $50.00 fare. It is believed that the assailant’s EFTPOS card was declined resulting in an argument with the assailant punching the Taxi Driver several times to his face and head before fleeing. The victim sustained a suspected broken nose.
David Samuel, Victorian Taxi Association Spokesman, said that “attacks on taxi drivers were becoming far too common…It’s appalling…this is someone’s workplace and it’s unacceptable.”
Taxi Drivers in Victorian have the right to ask for fares to be prepaid between 10.00 pm and 5.00 am but this is at the discretion of the driver. Pre-payment in this instance may have avoided the confrontation.
