A survey released this month of statistics on violence found that less than 50% of women who experience domestic violence report the assaults to police. The survey stated that there will always be women who are understandably distressed or embarrassed about having been subjected to such violence and subsequently do not report it.
The survey also found that only around 30%, some 18,000, of the estimated 60,000 adult sexual assaults in Australia each year are reported to police and that at least one woman is killed every week in Australia by a current or former partner.
