In 2011 – 2012 crime increased in Victoria by over 5% with some 200,000 offences recorded. Most alarmingly are the statistics on violent crime which are up more than 10% from the previous year.

There were 42,076 physical assaults, 2044 rapes and almost 10,000 more family violence incidents recorded by police.

Victoria’s prison population has also increased by 40% from 2001 to 2011 and spending on Victoria prisons has more than tripled over this period of time.

It appears that much more needs to be done to curb crime and keep the public safe.
