Robert Doyle, Melbourne Lord Mayor, has pledged more CCTV security cameras and a new mega taxi rank in Bourke Street to improve safety in the Melbourne CBD.

Robert Doyle said that while these measures are important the community also needs to address the current youth culture. He said that many young males feel alienated and need to be re-engaged with their community.

Noel McNamara, president of the Crime Victims Support Association, said that violence in Melbourne is out of control and you only need to walk around the Melbourne CBD at 3.00 am to realize this.

Other action required to reduce crime is an increase in front line police and improved public transport.
