The Western Australian Government unveiled today the Sex Offender Register website on which is posted the names, photos and criminal records of that state’s most dangerous sex offenders.
While similar websites have been operating overseas, including in America and Britain, this is the first website of its kind in Australia and it is hoped that all the other states will quickly follow.
In 1996 in America the Federal Megan’s Law was signed requiring states to disclose to the public information about sex offenders. In Britain in 2008 the government endorsed Sarah’s Law which allows parents to check if someone in contact with their child is a registered sex offender.
Linda Black, President of the WA Criminal Lawyers Association, said she can’t see how it will help the community. I would suggest that many parents of young children would certainly see how such a website could be of significant benefit.
